HI THERE! If you are a UBC Arts undergraduate who is bright, willing to learn, eager for a challenge, and interested in laying the academic foundation for a long and successful career, then Economics is a subject worth considering very seriously. The Economics Department at UBC has a range of options available for every level of interest in the subject.
The UBC Department of Economics is one of the leading departments of economics in Canada and ranks very highly world-wide. This record of excellence is based upon research, teaching and service to the community.
Economics is a social science and is an interesting and useful field of study for undergraduates. The emphasis is on promoting the intellectual growth and development of the individual student and graduates of our Honours, Majors and Combined Majors programs typically go on to distinguished careers in business, in government and in academia. Remember, the more thoughtful, knowledgeable and interesting you are as a person, the more likely you are to have a long and successful career.
For students who are interested in Economic topics but who do not wish to specialize in Economics, there are a great many courses available. In fact most 300 level courses (except Econ 303) require only Econ 101 and Econ 102 as a prerequisite, and so are available to almost everyone. The range of topics taught in these courses is awesome. Recent courses include Environmental Economics, Money and Banking, Labour Economics, International Economics, Economic History of Canada (or Europe or America), Poverty and Inequality, Public Finance, Women and the Economy, Law and Economics, Transition Economics and Globalization.
