The market for Ph.D. economists is strong, with ample job opportunities at universities, international organizations, government agencies, and in the private sector.
The department assists its students in finding positions by advertising their credentials to employers through a number of formal and informal channels. The department is also involved in the preparation of their “job market package” which is distributed to employers. This package includes the students’ research papers, curriculum vitae, and faculty reference letters.
The department also actively prepares its students for the interview process. In late-November, faculty members conduct mock interviews with job market candidates in preparation for interviews at the American Economic Association meeting and the Canadian Economics Employment Exchange. During this period, the departmental seminar schedule is reserved for its job market candidates, so students can practice their “job market seminar,” and receive invaluable feedback from faculty in all fields of the department.
The Economics department at UBC is dedicated to ensuring the success of its students on the job market. The department maintains a zero unemployment rate among its Ph.D. graduates. In recent years, students have accepted positions at institutions such as the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Copenhagen Business School, Florida State University, Princeton University, Simon Fraser University, Texas A&M University, University of Melbourne, University of Southampton, University of Toronto, Bank of Canada, Bank of England, International Monetary Fund, Statistics Canada, and the World Health Organization.
